A new face will be on the bench when the Cape Breton University CAPERS men’s baseball team takes to the field for the 2010 Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association season.
Sydney native George Long, a long time coach in local and provincial circles, will take over the reins from Geoff MacLellan, who guided the CAPERS to a berth in the national final last season.
“Geoff did a great job with the team last season and established the program as one of the best in the country,” said Long, who guided the Cape Breton Junior ‘AAA’ team to a 10-2 record in the Nova Scotia junior loop and a berth in the national championship this past summer. “We have a solid core of returning players committed to the program and there are a number of young new faces ready to step in to replace departed players. I’m confident in our chance of repeating as Atlantic Conference champions.”
MacLellan had hoped to return to the CAPERS bench, but found it necessary to step aside after being elected as the MLA for Glace Bay in this past spring’s by-election. While unable to return to coaching, MacLellan will help Long with the transition in the early weeks of the season.
Helping ease the transition for Long will be the return of veteran pitchers Justin Brewer (3-2, 1.04 ERA in 2009) and Mitchell Campbell (3-0, 4.26 ERA). Both Brewer and Campbell will be counted on heavily with the departure of Long’s son Kenny, who posted a 4-0 record with an ERA of 0.27 while being named the country’s top pitcher in 2009.
Both Brewer and Campbell provided solid offensive numbers last season as well while in the field, CBU will look to defensive stalwarts Matt Oliver and Jeff MacKinnon to provide leadership.
“There are a few other key players I have heard will be coming back and I know some members of my team as well some players from the Canadian Big League champion Cape Breton Dodgers will be enrolled at CBU so we should have a solid team at every position,” said Long.
Practice officially opens for the CAPERS Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Susan McEachern Memorial Ball Park in Sydney. If weather conditions take the team off the field, practice will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex Dome on the CBU campus.
Atlantic Conference league play will get underway Saturday, September 11 when CBU travels to Antigonish for a doubleheader with the St. Francis Xavier X-Men.
She gained a world of experience while starting with the Cape Breton University CAPERS women's basketball team for five seasons and now Kelsey Hodgson is off to conquer the professional basketball world.
Hodgson, the 22-year-old Fredericton native who led the nation in scoring in each of the past two seasons as the part of the CAPERS back-to-back AUS Championship squads, has signed a contract to play professionally for Torres Novas, a Division 1 club in Portugal next season.
Hodgson, who graduated from CBU in May with a Bachelor of Arts Community Studies degree, capped off her career with the CAPERS by averaging a CIS-high 22 points per game and leading the team to a second consecutive AUS championship. She became the CAPERS' all-time leading scorer in the process, was the AUS female nominee for the prestigious BLG Award, and was named this year's winner of the Myer and Jack Budovitch Award as Fredericton's athlete of the year.
With the help of her former CBU coaches Fabian MacKenzie and Doug Connors, Hodgson worked with agent Goran Gramatikov of Global Sports Plaza, an international sports scouting agency to secure the contract in Portugal.
Longtime Cape Breton University Athletic Director, Carl Bucky Buchanan, is among the newest inductees into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame.
For more than four decades, Buchanan has been helping build the sports of hockey, soccer and gymnastics on the island. He won 15 Nova Scotia College Conference championships and in 1978, won a national title as head coach of the then University College of Cape Breton Capers mens hockey team. Buchanan also served as athletic director at UCCB and was president and CEO of the 1987 Canada Winter Games.
Buchanan continues to be involved with CBU, currently serving on the Creating Champions campaign, to raise money for the Universitys Athletic Endowment Fund. Buchanan was also the Honorary Chair for the AUS 2010 Mens Basketball Championship held in Sydney in March. More

SYDNEY Cape Breton University Capers basketball standout Kelsey Hodgson recalls vividly when University of New Brunswick hockey star Rob Hennigar won a BLG Award in 2008.
"I remember that's all Fredericton talked about for a solid month," she said. "I know it's a huge honour."
Now Hodgson, herself a native of Fredericton, is nominated for the same honour.
Two BLG Awards are presented annually to the top female and male athletes chosen from all university teams affiliated with Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
"It's pretty awesome," said Hodgson, who was announced Wednesday as one of four nominees for the Jim Thompson Trophy presented to the female BLG Award winner, along with Montreal soccer player Véronique Maranda of Saint-Lambert, Que., Wilfrid Laurier hockey player Liz Knox of Stouffville, Ont., and University of British Columbia volleyball player Liz Cordonier of Vancouver. OTTAWA The Cape Breton University Capers' quest for a national championship was squashed by the University of Calgary Dinos in a 82-74 quarter-final loss at the 2010 CIS Final 8 Men's Basketball Championship, Friday at Scotiabank Place.
Capers head coach Jim Charters said his squad was behind the eight ball early, as defensive player of the year Phil Nkrumah suffered a serious shoulder injury while blocking a shot. Jimmy Dorsey, Paris Carter and Lasario Burrows were also in early foul trouble.
Despite those setbacks, the No. 2-seeded Capers managed to get out of the first half with a 42-39 lead over the No. 7-seeded Dinos.
"We weathered that storm and there were a lot of jitters I thought," said Charters, when reached by The Cape Breton Post by phone. "Being the first time here and they've been here last year and made it to the semifinals, they had the advantage. But I thought we weathered the storm. We got Jim and Paris out of the game and Bones (Lasario Burrows) out of the game last in the first half and went into halftime with a three-point lead." More

SYDNEY It was the fairy-tale ending fans of the Cape Breton University Capers men's basketball team dreamed of.
The No. 1-seed Capers bounced back from a 14-point deficit at one point in the first half to pummel their perennial rival - No. 2-seed St. FX X-Men - 94-77 in the 2010 Subway AUS Men's Basketball Championship final in front of 4,261 mostly orange-clad hoops fans at Centre 200, Sunday afternoon.
The Atlantic University Sport championship victory ends a drought that began after the CBU men won back-to-back AUS titles in 1993-94 and 1994-95. The last time the Capers reached a championship final was 2005-06, when they were dropped 83-72 by the X-Men.
The Capers now advance to the 2010 CIS Final 8 Men's Basketball Championship hosted by Carleton University at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Friday until Sunday.
Sunday's tilt saw CBU down 38-24 at one point in the second quarter, after which Capers head coach Jim Charters called a time out. His men responded with runs of seven and six points respectively. More
HAMILTON, ONT. - Kelsey Hodgson saved her best for last.

"Basically, two of my seniors, Kelsey and Karmen, decided they wanted to go out with a good win," said Capers head coach Fabian McKenzie, when reached by phone following Sunday's win.

Like many sports, basketball is a game of confidence and momentum. And the Saint Mary's Huskies got a dose of both when they travelled to Antigonish last Friday and dispatched the host St. Francis Xavier X-Men 87-79.
It was just the second regular season loss of the campaign for the X-Men, who will be one of six teams in Sydney this weekend vying for the AUS men's hoop championship.
Popular thought was that this year's event, slated for Friday through Sunday at Centre 200, was going to be a two-pony race with the X-Men and the league- champion Cape Breton Capers easily advancing to the Sunday final.
But with the long-range bombers from SMU (mainly Mark McLaughlin and Joey Haywood) draining 12 threes in their win over X, not withstanding the fact that John Campbell's Dalhousie Tigers (72-59 winners over Saint Mary's two weeks ago) are the defending champions, the weekend tourney has ultimately become a dice roll at best. How big is Wednesday night's AUS men's basketball game between the host Cape Breton Capers and the St. Francis Xavier X-Men?
Big enough that Cape Breton coach Jim Charters began getting requests more than a month ago for advance tickets that the team doesn't even sell.
The eyes of the AUS, and most of the CIS, will be on Sullivan Fieldhouse in Sydney when the X-Men, 15-0 in the conference and ranked second in the nation, battle the conference-leading Capers, 16-1 and ranked fourth in Canada. It is Cape Breton's final home game of the regular season with Mark McGarrigle, Chris Noddle and Ryan Roper bidding farewell to the Sullivan hardwood. More
In the most anticipated men's basketball game of the season at Cape Breton University, the CAPERS will host the rival St. Francis Xavier X-Men in an 8 p.m. tip off Wednesday, February 17 at the Sullivan Field House.
The highest scoring team in Canada averaging 96.6 points per game, the CAPERS are ranked No. 4 in Canadian Interuniversity Sport polls and take a 15-game unbeaten streak into the matchup with the undefeated X-Men, who are ranked No. 2 in the country.
"This is always a big game for us and this year it has become even more important as both teams are trying to carry their regular season momentum into the playoffs," says CBU Athletic Director John Ryan. "There is always a great rivalry between the two teams, but with a regular season title on the line as well, this is arguably the most anticipated game in the AUS, if not the CIS, this season."
This will also mark the last home game for three notable CAPERS, captain Mark McGarrigle, Chris Noodle and Ryan Roper.
StFX has been led all season by Christian Upshaw, who currently sits third in the AUS in scoring, averaging 19.3 points per game, but the CAPERS counter with one of the most balanced attacks in the country with five players (Jimmy Dorsey, 15.3 ppg, Paris Carter, 13 ppg, Tremaine Fraser, 12.9 ppg, Scott Jaspers-Fayer, 12 ppg and Phil Nkrumah, 11.3 ppg) averaging in double digits.
A win over the X-Men would certainly give the CAPERS an edge for the return match set for Antigonish on Friday, February 26 at 7 p.m. Both teams are preparing for the Subway 2010 AUS Men's Basketball Championship to be held at Centre 200 in Sydney March 12-14.

Andrew Rigby’s first season in the AUS men’s soccer league has exceeded all of his expectations.
The Cape Breton Capers’ first-year midfielder from Nottingham, England, who last week was tabbed as the league’s regular-season MVP and a first-team all-star, can add playoff MVP and an Atlantic conference championship title to his impressive university resume.
The Capers captured their second AUS men’s soccer championship in three years by defeating the UPEI Panthers 2-1 in overtime in the conference final Monday morning at Wickwire Field in Halifax.
Cape Breton and UPEI each advance to the CIS championship, which begins Thursday in Langley, B.C. The teams flew out later Monday evening bound for Vancouver, 50 kilometres northwest of Langley.
"It’s been unbelievable," Rigby said of his first AUS season. "To be honest, this wasn’t what I expected when I first came to Cape Breton. But it’s been a great year. More on thechronicleherald.ca

November 9, 2009 (HALIFAX, NS) - The CIS No. 3 ranked Cape Breton Capers defeated the UPEI Panthers by a score of 2-1 in overtime to claim the 2009 Subway AUS Men's Soccer Championship title Monday morning at Dalhousie's Wickwire Field in Halifax, NS.
It marks the second Atlantic conference championship banner for the Capers program in the past three years.
The opening half featured a few scoring chances for each squad, but the teams went into the half tied 0-0.
Second year forward Shayne Hollis (Bailey's Bay, Bermuda) opened the scoring for the Capers early in the second half, beating UPEI keeper Timma Kalinowski (Charlottetown, PE) to put Cape Breton up 1-0. More

Jimmy Dorsey didn't just make a good first impression, he made a great one.
The rookie point guard for the Cape Breton University Capers rained down a game-high 26 points on the Saint Mary's Huskies, as the home side marched to a 94-82 triumph Friday at Sullivan Field House. The game was the season opener for the Capers.
"He played a great game for us," said Capers head coach Jim Charters of Dorsey, who scored 15 of his points from beyond the arc. "Point guard isn't an easy position to play early in your career, so he's really stepped up his game the last four or five games and it was great to see him play so well tonight in the home opener." SYDNEY - Fabian McKenzie had a colourful way to describe the play of his Cape Breton University Capers women's basketball team in pre-season play leading up to tonight's season opener against the Saint Mary's Huskies.
"We return a veteran-laden group and everybody from a championship team except one, but that doesn't add to a recipe for success," he said. "We've been Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus. Which one are we? We just don't have our identity right now as to which team we want to be. That's the problem we're trying to sort out."
But McKenzie said his squad has plenty of that veteran experience to lean on. They'll do that in their season opener tonight, when they host the Saint Mary's Huskies at 6 p.m., with the men to follow at 8 p.m. The teams clash again with the same schedule Saturday. More
The Cape Breton University Capers have reached the semifinal round of the 2009 Atlantic University Sport women's soccer championship, being contested at Memorial University's Smallwood Drive Soccer Complex.
The Capers, the No. 3-seed at the tournament, defeated the host Memorial Sea-Hawks 2-0 in the second of two quarter-final games. Even a 30-minute power outage didn't slow down CBU in their quest for their fifth-straight AUS banner. More

Although this weekend will be the final Atlantic University Sport action for graduating midfielder Jason Davis, his impact with the Cape Breton University Capers men's soccer team will be seen for years to come.
Head coach Robbie Chiasson said Davis has been key in bringing fellow Bermudian players to the Capers program since Davis joined the team five years ago.
"Jason is such a positive person on and off the field," said Chiasson. "The players sort of gravitate around him off the field. He's been a great leader and has a wonderful personality and attitude. He works very hard in practice, he leads by example - it's going to be a big loss for us when he leaves the program." More
(Sydney, NS) Andrew Rigby, a midfielder with the CAPERS Men's Soccer Team, has been named Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Player of the Year and a 1st Team All Star. Andrew, a first-year Bachelor of Community Studies student, has also achieved CBU Athlete of the Week twice and Subway Player of the Game five times. This season, he has scored one goal and made an impressive 12 assists.
"Andrew has made an immediate impact in the AUS during his first year," says CAPERS head coach, Robbie Chiasson. "The former Nottingham Academy and England U16 international brings an elite level of play to the CAPERS midfield. His ability to make the killer pass for goal scoring opportunities has earned him 12 assists in the season in 12 games. Excellent first touch which seems to always get him into position to create offense with the ball."
Other CAPERS Men's Soccer players that have achieved AUS All Star status include: Keishen Bean, 1st Team All Star; Shayne Hollis, 2nd Team All Star and Antonio Lowe, 2nd Team All Star. The CAPERS will compete this weekend in hopes of advancing to the 2009 CIS Men's Soccer Championship hosted by Trinity Western University, November 12 -15.
Congratulations to Andrew Rigby and the CAPERS Men's Soccer Team as they pursue the CIS Men's Soccer Championship title.

It's been a remarkable turnaround for the Cape Breton Capers men's soccer program.
One year ago, the Capers were on the outside looking in during the Atlantic university championship weekend. The 2007 AUS champions fell one point short of advancing to the '08 AUS championship.
This season, Cape Breton is back on top. The Capers - fuelled by newcomers and Keishen Bean, the nation's leading goal scorer, and Andrew Rigby, an all-star midfielder out of England - finished first overall with a 9-1-3 record and have a quarter-final bye at this weekend's AUS championship at Dalhousie.
"Our recruiting class has been the difference for us this season," Capers head coach Robbie Chiasson said earlier this week. "When you add the nation's top scorer in Keishen Bean to your program, it's a huge addition. And Andrew Rigby has been one of the nicest midfielders we've seen in the league for a long time. That 1-2 punch of Rigby and Bean is difficult to defend." More

November 4, 2009 (HALIFAX, NS) - Atlantic University Sport is pleased to announce the 2009 women's soccer all-star teams as selected by the conference's head coaches following regular season play.
UPEI fourth year striker Tessa Roche, the 2005 Atlantic conference Rookie of the Year, leads the list of all-star selections announced today. Roche, who led the CIS in scoring in 2005 with 15 goals, scored a league-high 13 goals this season, the second highest total in the nation this season. Other Panthers honoured today include second year keeper Chanelle Roy, third year defender Sara Stewart and second year midfielder Andrea Archibald. Roy and Stewart are all-stars for the first time while Archibald was also a second team selection in 2008. More
November 4, 2009 (HALIFAX, NS) - Atlantic University Sport is pleased to announce the 2009 men's soccer all-star teams as selected by the conference's head coaches following regular season play.

Joining Bean on the first team is freshman midfielder Andrew Rigby. Second year striker Shayne Hollis, fifth year midfielder Jason Davis and third year fullback Antonio Lowe were the other Capers players honoured with second team selections. SYDNEY - Keishen Bean recorded a hat trick to lead the Cape Breton University Capers men's soccer team to a decisive 4-1 victory over the Acadia Axemen in Atlantic University Sport action at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex field behind CBU, Sunday afternoon.
Silvano Rajkovic added a single goal for the Capers, while Jereme Outerleys netted the Axemen's lone tally.
Earlier, the Capers women battled the Acadia Axewomen to a 1-1 tie.
Jennifer Sheppard of South Bar, in her last regular season game with the Capers after five years with the team, opened scoring in the eighth minute.
The Axewomen didn't respond until the 67th minute, when Becca Stunz found the back of the net for the Acadia women.
Both Capers teams advance to next weekend's AUS championships.

SYDNEY - The Cape Breton University Capers may have ensured a bye into the semifinal round of the upcoming Atlantic University Sport championship, but they still have plenty of reasons to hit the field in their final regular season game, Sunday.
The nationally-ranked No. 6 Capers, who sit in first place in the conference standings with an 8-1-3 record for 27 points, are looking to ensure top spot in the conference with a victory at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex field where they'll challenge the Acadia Axemen at 3:15 p.m. They lead the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (8-3-0) by three points, but the Panthers have two games to play this weekend.
Another reason is to help Keishen Bean win the AUS scoring title this season. Bean leads the conference with eight goals, one better than Jimmie Mayaleh of the Panthers. Prior to Thursday's games, he's also tied for second in the country in goals, one back of Trinity Western University's Nathan Pogue.
"Early in the season, I wasn't scoring much, but the coaches kept believing in me," said the 22-year-old from Sandys, Bermuda, a member of the Bermuda national team and captain of his country's under-23 side. More

SYDNEY - Jennifer Sheppard of South Bar and her four fellow fifth-year teammates will play their last regular season game with the Cape Breton University Capers women's soccer squad, Sunday, when they host the Acadia Axewomen.
"We were all talking about it at practice," said Sheppard, a forward whose fellow fifth-year Capers include Kiley Snow, Hannah Abenheimer, Kerri Mills and goalkeeper Jessica MacDermid. "It's going to be sad. We're going to hate to see it come. We were all talking about how fast it actually went and all the memories we're going to leave with." More

SYDNEY - The Cape Breton University Capers volleyball squad will kick off their season tonight, as the veteran-laden team begins their quest for their first Atlantic University Sport banner.
The Capers are looking to build on their 2008-09 season, where they finished in fourth place in the nine-team conference with a 9-11 record. CBU then advanced to the AUS semifinal, where they were bested by the eventual champion Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues.
CBU has reached the playoffs in seven of the last eight seasons and were one of the top four teams in the conference on five occasions. However, head coach Claude Lapré is hoping his team can reach beyond those heights.
They hit the court at Sullivan Field House at 7 p.m. against the Saint Mary's Huskies.
"I think we're a more mature roster than we used to have of course," said Lapré, in his eighth season with the team. "We've been young the last couple of years and had some big recruiting classes. We should be starting to show some maturity on the court and I hope it starts this Saturday." More

SYDNEY - Nicholle Morrison had to sit out the first four games of the Atlantic University Sport season, but it was something she used as motivation to get back into the lineup.
The 19-year-old forward from Whitney Pier leads the Cape Breton University Capers women's soccer team and is tied for fourth in the conference with four goals. That total could have been even higher, but she was forced to the sidelines because she didn't meet the team's distance running requirement.
But Morrison's time off the field helped her see where she fit into the lineup and made her appreciate being on the pitch even more.
"It was really hard to watch, just because I didn't have the chance to go on - I wasn't even dressed," said the Cape Breton Selects graduate. "It made me want it more, that I didn't get to play. More

SYDNEY - The executive director of Atlantic University Sport says with the 2010 Subway Final 6 AUS Men's Basketball Championship slated for Centre 200 in March, it could result in the event coming to Sydney and other venues in the coming years.
"If we have a very successful year in 2010, it provides us with a pretty solid argument internally to maybe keep the event here for maybe two more years beyond that when we host the national championship in Halifax in 2011 and 2012," said Phil Currie. "I think it would make sense to make it a little semi-permanent and look at other markets beyond that around the Maritimes. More

SYDNEY - The Cape Breton University Capers soccer teams were close to sweeping both Atlantic University Sport matches Friday against their archrivals from St. Francis Xavier University, but the visitors had other ideas in the dying moments of the second game of the day.
The Capers men seemed to be on their way to a 1-0 victory after Gregg Whiting gave the host side the lead only four minutes into the game. But the X-Men struck with the equalizer in the dying minutes, as Michael Marousek scored past a diving Chris Tournidis for a 1-1 draw at CBU Field.
A minor scrum ensued after the goal with Tournidis and an X-Men player, but cooler heads prevailed. The Capers boast a six-game undefeated streak since losing their season opener Sept. 12 against the Dalhousie Tigers, 1-0.
"Obviously, we're disappointed - we thought we had the game and thought we were doing everything right towards the end to get the result," said Capers head coach Robbie Chiasson, whose team's record is 3-1-3 for 12 points, tied for second in the conference. More

SYDNEY - Shayne Hollis didn't do anything complicated this summer preparing for the pending Atlantic University Sport season, crediting some good, old fashioned hard work for his strong start.
"I did a lot of extra running, sprints and extra ball work that's got me to another level, said the 20-year-old from Baileys Bay, Bermuda. The 5'4 forward used his speed and fancy footwork to lead the Capers' offence as their top scorer last season in his rookie year with five goals. But he's continued his torrid pace during the 2009 campaign, netting three goals for tops on the team and good enough for second in the league.
Hollis, a member of the Bermuda under-23 national team, has a three-game goal scoring streak and for his efforts, was named AUS male athlete of the week. His tallies included the game winner in a 2-1 triumph Saturday over the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds and the insurance marker in a 4-2 victory Sunday against the Moncton Aigles Bleus.
