(Halifax, N.S.)—The top two AUS women's basketball teams did not disappoint Saturday night as the Cape Breton University Capers upended the U Sports No. 9-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies 73-70.
Saint Mary's Angelina Carvery (Halifax, N.S.) paced all scorers with 31 points in the loss, The Huskies jumped out to a 21-15 lead after 10 minutes and saw the Capers battle back in the second frame, outscoring SMU 22-17.
Saint Mary's led 38-37 at the half.
Cape Breton outscored SMU 23-11 in the quarter and the Huskies trailed CBU 60-49 after thirty minutes. Saint Mary's battled back in the fourth quarter and trailed Cape Breton 70-73 when a Caper turnover with 11 seconds gave Saint Mary's one last chance. The Huskies missed their final two shots as time expired.
Carvery had 16 of her 31 points in the final frame and went 8-10 from three-point land.
Collen Keane (Scarborough, Ont.) led CBU with 18 points and Jalynn Skeir (Halifax, N.S.) had 13, with seven coming in the fourth quarter. CBU improves to 10-2 with 32 points and Saint Mary's drops to 10-3 and has 26 points.
Cape Breton hosts Dalhousie (2-10, 6 points) January 27th and 28th while Saint Mary's visits UNB (9-3, 24 points) January 27th and UPEI (4-7, 10 points) January 28th.
Tip-off for all four games is 6 p.m.
