Sydney, NS – The host team and #1 seed Cape Breton University CAPERS defeated the X-Women and dealt with nasty weather conditions to win their 10thAUS title and second in a row. Ciera Disipio scored the lone goal.
The first half featured some high winds that impacted the gameplay. The CAPERS playing with the wind were able to pin the X-Women in their own half and fired 13 shots on goal. However, they could only get 5 on the net. Ciera Disipio (Ottawa, ON) scored in the 35thminute to give the CAPERS a 1-0 lead heading into the half. The X-Women found it difficult to move the ball forward and managed just one shot that sailed wide of the net. St. FX keeper Emma Kuzmyk (Cookston, ON) did a good job of dealing with winds.
The second half high winds continued and tactics were reversed as the X-women held possession and an advantage in shots. The X-women outshot the CAPERS 9-1 in the second half but couldn't solve Rachel Yerxa (Mississauga, ON). The most dangerous shot was a Mercy Myles (Accra, Ghana) strike that Yerxa pushed off the post to preserve the victory.
Yerxa saved all four shots she faced for the clean sheet and victory. Kuzmyk saved 5 of 6 shots in a losing cause.
With the win, the CAPERS will now travel to Ottawa for the U Sports National Championships being hosted by the University of Ottawa November 8thto 11th.
