UBC waits until the very end to get past CAPERS, 1-0

In a nail-biting semifinal of the 2024 BMO U SPORTS Women's Soccer Championship, UBC Thunderbirds edged the Cape Breton CAPERS 1-0, with Bailey Doerksen scoring the game-winning goal in the second period of extra time. The decisive moment came in the 116th minute when Doerksen seized an opportunity, connecting on her third time of asking after two attempts seconds earlier were stopped by Capers' goalkeeper Ellie Lancaster.

Despite the loss, Lancaster was instrumental for CBU, producing an impressive 15 saves and earning Player of the Game honours. Throughout the match, she thwarted numerous UBC chances, keeping her team in contention until the very end. UBC dominated the offensive play, registering 26 shots, but struggled to convert those opportunities until the pivotal moment.

The Thunderbirds, with their flawless overall record of 18-0-0, booked their ticket to the championship match, showcasing their resilience and talent. The CAPERS, who head to the bronze medal game after suffering their first loss of the season, displayed grit and determination, especially in defence, but ultimately fell short in a tightly contested battle at Wickwire Field.
