The CAPERS Hall of Fame was inaugurated in 2019
Cape Breton University possesses a rich history of organized sports dating back to 1951. The university, its students, administrators, and coaches figure prominently in the origins and development of sport and continue to be major players in the local, national and international sports scene.
The CAPERS Hall of Fame was inaugurated during the Presidential Leadership Dinner 2019. The CAPERS Hall of Fame was established to recognize outstanding student-athletes, teams, and builders responsible for Cape Breton University's continued excellence in sports.
Hall of Fame Selection Process & Nomination Categories
The selection of the most outstanding student-athletes, teams, and builders from any era is a challenging one. The Selection Committee has established eligibility guidelines.
Student-Athletes:
(i) Must have represented Cape Breton University as a student-athlete normally for a minimum of three (3) years.
(ii) Must have been recognized for competing at a high level during their time of participation. The athlete should have received recognition by the University, the AUS, U Sports, ACAA, CCAA, or previous university athletics governing bodies.
(iii) Normally, consideration for selection will be given to an athlete following a minimum ten (10) year waiting period following their last participation as a varsity student-athlete athlete.
Teams:
(i) Must have achieved conference championship, national championship, or top 3 finish or equivalent at the National level.
(ii) Normally, consideration for selection will be given to a team following a minimum ten (10) year absence from the varsity program.
(iii) Teams winning a national championship will be inducted automatically following a ten (10) year waiting period.
Builders:
(i) Must have made a significant contribution to Cape Breton University other than as an athlete. This category includes coaches, administrators, media, or athletic supporters.
(ii) Normally, consideration for selection as a builder will not be given to an individual until ten (10) years after their initial involvement.
Nomination Process
The Steering Committee is responsible for calling for nominations through such publications as Distinction Magazine, the printed Varsity Schedule & Varsity Programs, and social media accounts.
The deadline for receipt of all completed nominations is March 31st of each year.
Any individual with an interest in Cape Breton University Athletics (e.g. faculty, staff, administration, alumni, athletes, students, the media, and the general public) may put forth a nomination in any of the three categories – Athlete, Team or Builder.
