Cape Breton University Signs Rudi Jurincic

SOCCER is the beating heart of every proud and passionate Croatian community in Canada.
This small European nation of less than four million people has produced a golden generation of players who were World Cup runners-up to France in Russia in 2018 before winning a bronze medal in Qatar four years ago.
Think about that. A country whose census charts them at a QUARTER of the population of the province of Ontario has such a powerful effect on the world game.
CBU CAPERS Men's program latest signing Rudi Jurincic may be a born and bred native of Hamilton, Ontario, but when you speak with him there is no doubt of the impact his grandparents' heritage has had on him.
"When you grow up in a Croatian community this game is everything to you," admits Rudi who will study Business Administration when he arrives on campus this fall.
"I can't remember when I didn't have a ball at my feet and my proudest moments as a youth footballer have been with Hamilton Croatia just balling with the friends I have grown up with.
"The club wears the famous checkered red and white jerseys that the Croatia national team does and that has always been special to me."
Croatia's National Embassy estimates that there are around 250,000 emigrants with roots to their country in Canada.
That source of influence will now be doubled in the CAPERS locker-room as Rudi joins second-year goalkeeper Luka Palajsa in the relaunch squad of 2026.
"I have already been in touch with Luka to speak about what I can expect when I arrive on the island," reveals Rudi.
"He has a similar background to me and it will be a lot of fun to have a fellow Dinamo Zagreb fan alongside me!
"I feel that for both of us that feeling of a football community in Cape Breton is vitally important.
"I could see in the faces of the crowd of the fans when I watched the Nationals winning film from 2023 how much the program means to the people there. I just thought: "I want to be a part of that and help them do it again."
CAPERS Head Coach Deano Morley has embarked upon a carefully planned relaunch of his program for this Fall.
Rudi carries with him a sense of humility and a desire to graft and improve, qualities the experienced English leader deeply values.
"Cape Breton University's vision states, Rooted in Cape Breton, Connected to the world" and we love bringing people, cultures, and football philosophies together from all around the globe. That excites me and brings real energy and passion into our environment," stresses Deano.
"That multicultural approach is a big part of what will continue to drive the growth of the game in Canada, and it's something both U SPORTS and the CPL need to keep pushing to raise the level.
"Cape Breton University is proudly diverse, and within our program we take real pride in providing opportunities for young men from around the world to come here, study, and play football full-time.
"Rudi's roots in Croatia stood out straight away as did his love for the game when we first met. It felt authentic, and that matters."
When you watch Rudi play, one of attributes that stands out is the sense of assurance he carries in one so young, the gifted midfielder doesn't turn 19 until July 27 when he will be counting down the days to his first CAPERS pre-season camp.
Croatia's soccer heritage is woven with artists who played in that area of the field from the maverick Robert Prosinecki in the 90s to 2018 Ballon d'Or winner and Real Madrid legend Luka Modric.
Rudi's choice as his all-time favourite speaks volumes to the qualities he feels he can bring to Morley's midfield when the AUS campaign begins at home to Mount Allison and then StFX on September 5 and 6.
"You are kind of brought up on our great history of midfielders and everyone idolises Modric," he points out.
"Yet for me it must be Ivan Rakitic who won the Champions League with Barcelona and could live in a team with the likes of Messi and Neymar.
"I am always honest about my strengths and weaknesses, and I know I can work on my pace but when you don't have that as a natural gift you have to be quicker upstairs and that's always been my aim. To be a thinking footballer like Rakitic.
"I hope I can bring that and my range of passing to the CAPERS to be a success."
Underneath the mannerly and grounded demeanour there is a steeliness in Rudi when you talk football with him.
His passion for the game is evident and that is a key quality he has seen reflected in every conversation with his new coach.
"Deano is a winner; you sense that from the get-go and I wanted to be surrounded by winners.
"That's what I will get in Cape Breton, and I just want to add to the story now and help bring another National title during my stay there."
Rudi will be glued to every Croatia game in the World Cup Finals this summer.
After that, Coach Morley's knows his new recruit's full focus will turn to arriving at pre-season camp in the best shape of his life.
"As a footballer, he has a brilliant football brain. He reads the game well, he's technically sound, Rudi is someone we know we can trust within our system," says Deano.
"We look for players who show up every day, who are willing to sacrifice and put the team first. Those types are not easy to find, and with Rudi we've found a young man who brings that mindset.
"He's passionate, he's determined, and he's very comfortable on the ball. I believe he will grow and succeed in our environment.
"Off the field, he takes his studies seriously and has already shown strong time management and independence. That tells us he is ready for the demands of what we do here.
"He's hungry. He wants to work, he wants to be challenged, and he wants to compete. That's exactly what we value."
