This summer Cape Breton University (CBU) will launch CAPERS in the Community, a new multisport program that will deliver multisport programming to communities throughout the CBRM.
CBU to Launch CAPERS in the Community Program
(Sydney, NS) - This summer Cape Breton University (CBU) will launch CAPERS in the Community, a new multisport program that will deliver multisport programming to communities throughout the CBRM. The initiative is a partnership with Cape Breton Regional Municipality's (CBRM) Recreation and Active for Life.
John Ryan, CBU Athletics Director says, "CBU is so proud to partner with the CBRM Recreation Department to provide this exciting new CAPERS in the Community program this summer to our youth. The youth are our future and we want to take our President's lead and help champion the Island's prosperity. This partnership with the CBRM will allow us to take our multisport camps to many communities this summer and provide a great opportunity for our youth to become engaged and participate in sport."
The program. a free, four-day activity camp, will give youth aged 5-12 the opportunity to try various sports while building physical literacy and fundamental movement skills to help them become active for life. Cape Breton's youth will benefit from participating in as many different sports and physical activities as possible while they learn movement and sport skills.
Kirk Durning, CBRM's Manager of Recreation, says, "Multisport is recognized as the national best practice for development of children and youth through the acquisition of physical literacy and fundamental movement skills. Our department understands the important role this high quality program plays in building a healthier, more active community. By partnering with CBU on the Capers in the Community Multisport program, we have worked together to provide unprecedented access to multisport for kids throughout our municipality. We believe having the municipality and CBU powering the multisport movement in the community provides a tremendous potential to break down barriers to participation and ultimately impact the health of children and youth in CBRM. "
Deano Morley, CBU Head Men's Soccer Coach and Program Lead, says "This program and partnership is about bringing quality leadership and quality inclusive programming to our communities, we want to inspire children through sport and physical activity. Capers in the community is about giving kids an active start by providing them with fun engaging opportunities to learn to move, inspiring them to be active. We know that children who are exposed to a multisport approach develop physical literacy skills and confidence and that is what we want to achieve through this partnership; build healthier communities."
There is no cost or registration required for the program. Parents and guardians are able to drop off their children when their schedule allows. The program will begin July 2, in Neville Park, Whitney Pier and Breton Education Centre Field, New Waterford, and conclude on August 8, with camps in Sydney Mines and Prime Brook.
