CAPERS Head Coach Ness Timmons coaching for the second year in the World Medical Football Championships
Sydney, NS – CAPERS Head Coach Ness Timmons will be the head coach for the second year in a row for the Canadian Women's Medical Football (soccer) Team as they head to Ireland to participate in the World Medical Football Championships in Dublin, Ireland July 5 - 12, 2025.
The founder of the World Medical Football Championships (WMFC), Dr. Ferran Morell, initiated the event in Barcelona, Spain in 1995. Originally, the event catered to men's teams and Canada's first men's team to participate in the event was formed in 2016. Dr. Aisha Mirza, a current member of the Canadian women's team of doctors, was the first woman to play with the Canadian Men's Vogel Team (45+) in 2022. Founder, Dr. Morell, stated that he had always envisioned the tournament to be co-ed and hoped there would soon be a Women's Division. This dream came true when Dr. Mirza founded the Canadian Women's Medical Football Team in 2023. This is where CAPERS own Ness Timmons comes into the picture.
Timmons was brought on board to coach the Canadian Women's Medical Football Team, now known as True North FC, during the first time the WMFC had a women's division. In summer 2024 in Australia's Sunshine Coast, the team hit the pitch to face teams from Panama, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, and Mixed Nations. They finished with a 5-1-1 record, bringing home the silver medal.
"It's a terrific concept," shares Timmons in reference to the WMFC. "It's a wonderful opportunity for these doctors to connect, to network with fellow professionals in their field and share the love of the universal game."
True North FC will be back at it this summer, in Dublin, Ireland with Coach Timmons at the helm again. There are players from across the country on the roster including 3 players from Nova Scotia – Dr. Celyna Arnold, Dr. Bethany Wilkes and CAPERS Alumni, Dr. Karolyne (Blaine) MacDonnell.
"This team of doctors is very organized and as you can imagine, a very professional group," Timmons says of the 2025 True North FC roster. "A joy to deal with."
Competition in the football tournament is not their only mission. The WMFC is being held in conjunction with the 29th International Symposium of Medicine and Health in Sport where participating physicians engage in collaborative learning and continuing medical education.
