CAPERS fall to Huskies in a close 68-63 battle
SYDNEY, NS - The CBU CAPERS came close to a win against the Saint Mary's Huskies in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action on Friday, January 30 at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
The Huskies came out strong in the first quarter. The CAPERS had their opportunities but had a hard time finding the mesh. The Huskies finished the quarter up 19-9. The second quarter was much of the same with SMU's shot percentage high and CBU still struggling with their shot. The Huskies were up 41-23 at the half.
The CAPERS started to generate some offence in the third but the Huskies were still shooting well. The quarter ended 54-34. Then, the CAPERS found their game and chipped away at the gap in the fourth. The shots were falling but the surge came a bit too late and the CAPERS fell short of their comeback by 5 points as the game ended 68-63.
Lauren Armstrong netted 23 points for the Huskies and teammate Angong Jacob added 19. Emily Dikdan posted 8 rebounds to help with the win.
Alicia Bowering, the Subways of the CBRM Player of the Game, led the team with 20 points. Amanda Cruickshank added 14 and Cameron Clarke chipped in with 10.
The CAPERS played in their pink jerseys tonight in honour of the Shoot for the Cure initiative. The women's basketball team spent the last few weeks doing some fundraising activities with all money earned being donated to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. Once we have calculated the total amount raised, we will share it with everyone - stay tuned!
The CAPERS are back in action tomorrow in a rematch against Saint Mary's at 2pm followed by the men's game at 4pm. It is "sports day" tomorrow - we will have all kinds of activities set up on court 2 to keep young and old enrtertained!
