CAPERS fall to the Axewomen in last home game of the season.
Sydney, NS – The CBU CAPERS lost to the Acadia Axe-Women in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action on Saturday, February 14, at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
This matchup was the last home game at CBU as well as the last game for the CAPERS this season.
The CAPERS got off to a slow start, missing several shots in the first part of the quarter. Things brightened up for the last part of the quarter with the ball falling and bringing the gap to 11 behind the 2nd place Acadia Axewomen. In the second quarter, Ella Dunn made two 3-points shots to help the CAPER offence, but Acadia hit 20 of 41 field goals to widen the margin by 23 at the half.
The third quarter saw the CAPERS slowly making a comeback, bringing the score to within 19. The fourth quarter was when the CAPERS kicked it into gear and tested the Axewomen defence. Alicia Bowering sunk two 3-point shots to help the CAPERS but there was not enough time on the clock and the game ended 76-62 in favour of Acadia.
Samantha Russell of Acadia had the game high with 23 points. Bianca Helmig scored 13 with teammate Sophie Fowler adding 12.
Amanda Cruickshank led the way for the CAPERS with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Kristen Taylor, the Subways of CBRM Player of the Game, netted 11 and added 9 rebounds.
This young team has grown so much over the course of the season, and they'll come back in September even stronger.
